Duchess of the Night

'Duchess of the Night'

The imposing form of a Stanier 'Princess Coronation' Pacific No.46228 'Duchess of Rutland' looms out of the evening gloom at the south end of Rugby station during 1963. By this time some of these magnificent machines had already been withdrawn and the remaining examples often found themselves relegated to more humble duties than in former years when they were the flagships of the West Coast expresses.

Three of these wonderful locomotives have found their way into presevation, sadly No.46228 was not one of them and was withdrawn from Crewe North sheds in September 1964 and scrapped.
